Do dual band routers provide better service to computers connecting wirelessly in a bigger house, computers further away from the actual router?

Would I do just as well to get a wireless access point?

Dual band just means both 2.4 and 5 Ghz. 5Ghz has less distances, especially through walls.

So no, just being "dual band" doesn't increase the range at all.

Invest in a "high power" 2.4Ghz router if you want range, and make sure to use "high power" (preferably with external 5dbi or better antennas) client adapters.

I can tell you that the Netgear WNDR 3700 I just got is delivering a much stronger 2.4GHz signal than did my old WRT54G. All four wireless clients in my home (including my phone, which I used for radio streaming in my bedroom across the house) are experiencing a faster, stronger connection. Have not found a use for the 5 GHz band as yet.
