I was planning on getting a dual Athlon MP system, with a Tyan Tiger mobo, but now that the new XP chips are out, i was thinking if it would work to plop in an XP chip instead of an MP. In theory, as far as i can tell, there shouldn't be a problem. the MP and the XP both have the same die, and run on the same FSB, and both use DDR-SDRAM, and both fit into the same socket-A caseing. Would this work?? What would be the diffrence? What is so special about the MP that makes it better for a dual processor setup that the XP doesnt have? What would be the difference if i used 2 XP chips or if I used 2 MP chips?? I would appreciate any and all input that you guys/galls can muster up, and i thank you all in advance.

Thanks a lot for your help

According to this review of dual Durons at the Firing Squad they will not. Here's the quote

<< One of the interesting things about the last two processors is that they both contain the same optimizations and features that are in the Athlon MP. This means they should perform just as well as Athlon MP. However, AMD has locked the Athlon XP so that it will not operate in SMP mode; other than the lock, the Athlon XP is identical to the Athlon MP. The Duron MP on the other hand is an interesting processor in a unique situation. >>

That is simply not true. A number of people are running XP 1800+'s in SMP systems, my pair go in tonite.
