Dual Athlon motherboard... do they exist.. or are they being developed?

I currently have a dual 533 celeron system on abit's bp6 motherboard, the only dual socket370 board I could find, however they are coming out with a vp6 in late october(or so I'm told) that will support dual celerons/celeron2/pentium III flip chips.

However, I have seen several people have quite good luck with the new athlons and I would like to try, but I wanted to have a dual athlon system, but I haven't found any motherboards that do this... can the athlons even support SMP???

thanx in advance...

All Durons are SMP-enabled

I've received word from more than one reliable source that the Durons that are currently shipping are in fact SMP-capable. There have been a few rumors as of late that only later-year Durons and T-Birds would be able to make use of the AMD-760MP chipset, but it looks like this isn't that case. Rob, the source of JC's earlier news on the AMD 760's impending availability, also wrote in with some more information and clarifications. Lemme just slep 'em up here.

We were told that SMP capability of the the current CPU's was only negatively affected by the current Northbridge design, not the cpu design. The current north bridge limits SMP to two processors per Northbridge at the moment. The only CPU core redesigns going on are to reduce power consumption of the Athlon core, specifically for the Palomino and the Mustang. With the current design a Mustang enabled with 2megs of L2 cache would require a heatsink weighing in at 1000grams, and being 8 or 9 inches tall, they showed us a picture of just such a heatsink for laughs 🙂

I forgot to mention it to JC, FYI the K6-2 is officially dead, they will cease accepting orders for it on October 1st, and will cease all shipments by October 22nd.

Thanks Rob (and the others who want to remain in the shadows)! I tell you what--this is still hard to believe. If all true (and there's no reason to think it's not at this point), AMD deserves a round of applause for being so bold. -Cæsar

The current processors are SMP capable and numerous chipsets capable of SMP configurations are being developed now.
