Dual AMD XP problem, please help...

So my cousin wanted to build a system and I helped him out with parts. He has everything there, and putting it together, and it's a dual AMD setup, with a Tyan Tiger. We were worried that the newer 1900+ chips had the L5 bridge cut, thus disabling MP support, but when he looked at the chip, that wasn't the case. But now, he says that one of the chips doens't even work...it'll boot and has had Windows installed, with the one chip, but when the other one is put in, or on its own, the computer won't even boot. The odd thing is that he says that before installing, the computer POSTed as 2 MP chips...

Other than any other suggestions about what to do, could/should he run one XP and one MP chip? Is there any physical difference other than the bridge being crossed/cut?

You might only be able to use 2 of the same i.e. 2 x mp or 2 x xp

IS it that the computer wont boot windows or just wont post?

It wouldn't even post with the "bad" chip in there, whether in dual or on it's own.

The chip is then probably just dead.

When he attempted to run the board with just one chip, I assume that he removed the "good" chip from the CPU 1 socket and replaced it with the "questionable" chip, again in the CPU 1 socket. I don't think that leaving the "questionable chip" in the CPU 2 socket will allow it to run alone.
If the "questionable chip" will not post in the CPU 1 socket, when the "good" chip does, then the chip must be DOA. It has little to do with XP or MP status.
The board will run just fine with only one chip, even an XP; but it has to be a live chip, not a dead one.
