dual 246 Opterons vs Athlon 64 3500+ oc'd to 2.45GHz

Let's say we're talking about a gaming rig...which system would be better? A dual opteron solution or an Athlon 64 3500+. For those that think opterons are not suited for gaming, you are mistaken. It's the same chip for the most part, just marketed to different consumers.

DOH! forgot my memory isn't ECC Registered....

it would be on a Tyan Thunder K8SD Pro (S2882-D) motherboard

I just looked at that. That is one cool mobo. I might get one. I haven't had a 2cpu system since my old file server (2 xeon) 2opteron + SLi= sweet!

I assume you're talking about the AMD event? I'm kinda wondering the same thing. Here's what's offered. I'm also wondering if the Opteron bundle would be good for a gaming/home PC.

Tech Tour 2005 - Desktop Bundle

Price: $250.00

AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 939 pin CPU
Asus A8N-E Socket 939
Windows XP Professional x64 Edition

Tech Tour 2005 - Server Bundle

Price: $500.00

2 AMD Opteron 246 CPUs ? (Tray)
Tyan Thunder K8SD Pro (S2882-D)
Windows Server 2003 x64 Edition

Yup, incredibly tempting... If I can find some good passive cooling for it, it would make one killer system. I know ECC memory can be a pain....not sure if I want to replace my kingston HyperX

Actually I own both, and for GAMING, the 3500 is better....And way cheaper....

Does it have to be now? A 4400+ X2 @ 2.2GHz x 2 surely must beat two 246s @ 2.0GHz, and it's cheaper too.

The only good reason to get a two socket board anymore is if you really need the benefits of registered RAM, or if you're going to put two dual core processors in it, for one monster of a workstation or server.

edit: Then again, all that for $500? Dayum!

WHatever one I end up choosing, I guess I'll have to start reading up on that. I've been scouring the MSI and DFI forums for weeks getting info on both of those MB's trying to make a decision. Now I might have to find the Asus forum. 🙂

Seeing as games are all currently single threaded, they can only use one processor. So if the opteron system uses CPU's that are faster (in mhz), it will be faster at gaming. If the 3500 is faster than the opterons, it will be faster at gaming.

By the way, the Opterons don't require ECC memory, they require registered memory.
I would get a dualcore 4400+ and 939 board like others have commented and overclock it. You could probably get close to and over 250 (2.4) Opteron speeds with faster ram.

But, that dual, dual core, sli can be tempting.

I'm all over this: bump

Oh squat!! You can't even put a video card in there🙁 I'd still like to know please.
http://www.tyan.com/products/html/thunderk8sdpro.html

Man this a smoking deal

Board $380
chips $333x2 $666

Total $1046 for less than $500!!!!

And a free $700 OS!!!

Deal of century

Well, unless you're planning on re-engineering the Tyan motherboard to contain a AGP or PCIe X16 slot, I very much doubt it will be faster in gaming than a 3500+.

Yea they really killed this deal for gamers with no AGP/PCIe slot🙁 I went looking and the fastest PCI Vcard was a 9250... pretty lame. Man I want one these though just for novelty sake.. plus to try out server 2003 which is hella expensive.
