Well finally I got a motherboard that worked.
Gigabyte the Flash was the wrong version and broke the BIOS.
ASUS the floppy section was bad.
Gigabyte (another board) not approved for use with 1800's.

Tyan Tiger don't boot/load Win XP off Promise TX2000 but I kept it.
I have a Quiet Enermax 550 power supply. Two variable speed quiet fans (Enermax and Thermaltake) and stock coolers on the 2 1800 MPs and it sounds so loud. Hair dryer between low and medium setting. And I thought my Alpha cooler was loud! My wifes gonna have a cow when she gets off work in the morning. AND I don't even have the other computer on.
Any suggestions?

One solution is to replace what you think is noisy.

If its the CPU Fans, then have a look at the Zalman (These arent that great for overclocking, but thats the decision you gottam make - my Cu6000 cooler is quieter than my Papst case fans)

If its case fans then try and locate some Papst fans as replacements. Mine are 12 dB...

Hope this helps :)

I put some Volcano 5's on my dual XPs (with a Tyan S2460 board) and it's MUCH quieter (they run at about 2400rpm) and running just a couple of degrees C over my other dual XP that has the Coolermaster HHC-001 (~7000rpm) in use. I need to find some quieter case fans for the rear of the case now.

Conjur,

Papst case fans are some of the best, dont know if you want to spend that much though. Although its a UK dealer, you can have a look here for some information. :)

I've got so much stuff in my house now, that trying to keep down the fan noise is pretty much pointless; however, since they[PCs] are mostly all in my basement, I don't care. ;)

I concur with Migroo, Papst fans are great..

I dont use any other in my computers, mostly the Papst 8412 NGL (12 dBA) but on the CPU (Alpha 8045) i use the Papst 8412 NGML (19 dBA)..
And a Enermax 430W powersupply with a Papst 8412 NGL as the only fan.. :)

Its really quite noiseless, now i just have to find a way to stop the noise from the air runnng though the case :)
hmm, i could turn off the fans :p

Heheh, I'm not that extreme.

My Hard Drive is now the noisiest thing in the case... but all the fans add up, there is still definately a quiet 'whoosh' sound, but without the motor whine :D

Thanks, Migroo.

Hmm...that works out to what...about $20/fan+shipping? Might have to consider that since this PC is going to be the Home Theater PC and I need it to be pretty quiet.

I have the ax7 with thermaltakes fan 43 cfm at 29 db (and 30 db is a whisper?) on the low end.

I have ordered two of the gc68's and will try them for a comparison once they come in.

what type of cfm rating do those pabst fans have, I am trying to keep my AMD 1800's within 30 degrees F of ambient.

Conjur, no problem :)

Yeah it works out to about that. They ship to the US too, which might be useful as I hear that people in the US have a hard time trying to find a vendor within the continent. Papst fans are made in Germany I think, so go figure :( Anyway I havent had any trouble with OcUK in the 2 times that I have ordered from them (both were within the last 6 months).

EDIT: Since you want this PC to be a home theatre this might be useful. When I recieved these fans (the 19.4 CFm versions) I was excited to hear what noise they produced. I plugged them in and could hear nothing from about 1.5 feet away! If you hold them close (2 inches) to your ear, you can just hear a low 'hummmm'. A word of warning though. If your fans are protected by airflow-unfriendly grills (like OEM pressed steel versions) then the slow airflow that these fans produce can be somewhat hindered. If you are concidering these types of fans, then to make the most you should install some nice rounded smooth steel fan grills to promote airflow.

Then again, one intake (easy airflow), one exhaust (big fat steel grill :() and a decent-ish (doesnt have to be loud) HSF will see you through. My 1700+ runs at 56 deg. C 24/7 and is fine (100% SETI load) - Zalman 6000-Cu HSF running at slowest setting.

Cakin, have a look at the link in my last post, but here you go anyway :)

3 speeds of 80mm fan are available from Papst (as far as I know) -

Papst 8412 NGL 80mm fan (4 pin) (FG-003-PA)
Sintec Sleave Bearing for ultra-quiet operation
CFM = 19.4cfm
RPM = 1500
dBA = 12

Papst 8412 NGML 80mm fan (4 pin) (FG-000-PA)
CFM = 26.5cfm
RPM = 2050
dBA = 19

Papst 8412 NG 80mm Fan (4 pin) (FG-001-PA)
CFM = 40.6cfm
RPM = 3100
dBA = 32

Just FYI I use te 12 dB 19 CFm versions. One intake/one exhaust. My 1700+ runs at 56 deg. C running SETI 24/7 using a Zalman 6000Cu on the lowest speed setting (barely audible)

Wow - long post! :Q Sorry to drone on, hope the information is useful! :)

that noise can get annoying.
until yesterday i had
3 of the dual tyans running in my office. along with 4 raid cabinets
and another 6 computers. it really got on my nerves
i moved some of them to a rack.
last night i picked up a bunch of black foam
and put it on the wall behind the rack and another computer.
that really helped a lot with the noise.
(the rack is not in my office but i wanted to keep the noise down in that
area as well)

the noise is worth it for the speed i get out of these dual rigs

my seti cluster does not have cases (except for 2 machines).
built a shelf system large enuff to fit a motherboard with
a video card using about a 6 inch spacing.
each shelf can hold 2 boards. and there are 15 of shelves.
its not full right now.

production machines do need cases and all the ones
i am building now are rack mount.
