DTT2500 and a new sub

I got the Cambridge Soundworks DTT2500 speakers a while ago (when hifi was giving away a "free" dvd player with them), and while they generally sound ok, I've been pretty dissapointed in the bass, especially when listening to music (classical, tmbg, whatever). Depending on what I adjust the subwoofer "volume" to, things either sound too tinny, or entirely too heavy, like the bass is on its own separate track, just thudding away in time to the music. There doesn't seem to be a middle ground.

Do you guys think getting a replacement subwoofer (which you can do, since there is a sub-out port on the receiver-thingee) would help? I was thinking something along the lines of a Soundworks BassCube 10. Has anybody tried this or something similar with these speakers? I don't want to spend $200 on a sub, only to find it was really some other part of the speaker system that was lacking...

Thanks in advance,

I have a DTT2500 myself, and I sympathize with you. I know exactly what you're talking to...

But I have to play for the other camp when I say you should spend that $200+ dollars on a new speaker system altogether. The amplifier isn't enough to drive a separate subwoofer, let alone something like the BassCube 10.

Consider the Klipsch speakers...

Isn't the BassCube self-powered, though? From hifi.com: "The BassCube 10 features a 10" long-throw woofer and a 75W RMS amplifier." My limited understanding is that the DTT2500 receiver would just pass the bass signal to the BassCube (from the special Subwoofer Line Out jack, not the normal subwoofer jack that the included sub connects to) which would handle the driving itself. Thus the DTT2500 wouldn't have anything to do with driving the new subwoofer.

Plus, my DTT2500 system came with an ad for the BassCube as an upgrade option, so at least the Soundworks people (who admittedly are a little biased) think it's a viable idea.

Thoughts?
