DTS Decoding/SDPIF Passthrough sound cards

I currently have an X-Fi Elite Pro, constantly with the sound distortion and popping on my system, I'm fed up with it. I was wondering if there was a sound card out there with SDPIF (toslink) passthrough as well as decode. Hardware decoding would be preferable.
 
You mean to feed in DD or DTS from an external source and have the card decode it? No, I am not aware of one. That's where a receiver comes into play.
 
I recommend any sound card that uses C-Media's Oxygen HD CMI8787 or CMI8770 chipset. Largely regarded as the best. It depends on what your budget is. The AuzenTech X-Plosion uses the CMI8770 which supports full DTS decoding and all DTS features. It also has both optical toslink and digital coaxial passthrough outputs. If you want DTS Master Audio or Dolby Digital True HD, you're SOL as no cards (other than the Xonar, which I've heard a lot of mixed things about) support onboard decoding of them. Just passthrough.

DTS Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD can not be carried on toslink/SPDIF connections. You would have to have HDMI connection for that. I believe that most cards with the digital in and out would have the ability to do a passthru, though there are probably a few exceptions.

As far as DECODING of DTS-MA and TrueHD when playing back HD-DVD/Bluray content on the PC goes, that is usually done by the playback software with appropriate codec support included; it is usually an add-on.

To the OP: I'm guessing this is likely for HTPC use? You might want to have a look at the HTPC forum over at http://www.avsforum.com/. That is the sort of thing they deal with everyday and they might be able to give you a better answer.
