This year Daylight Saving Time (DST) extends by approximately four weeks. In compliance with this provision in the Energy Policy Act of 2005, DST dates in the United States and Canada will start three weeks earlier (2:00 A.M. on the second Sunday in March) and will end one week later (2:00 A.M. on the first Sunday in November).

Gee, thanks for the heads up. :)

I've been patching dozens of servers for this stupid time change, since almost every operating system and version of Java in existence needs a patch for this :(

That covers Windows, but Java has it's own time zone rules that need updating. Both IBM and Sun have timezone update scripts for their versions of Java, which you'll want to get if you're running any servers that use a Java virtual machine that's running all the time.

Also, don't forget to disable the automatic time zone change feature on your VCR if it has one. Unless you have a newer "smart" VCR that automatically pulls the time off of your cable channel, it's not going to change the time at the right date anymore :(

Heh, smartass :) It's not just VCR's... My fairly new TV/VCR/DVD combo unit also has an automatic time zone change option which won't work right anymore thanks to the DST date change. I'd imagine that there are a lot of devices with embedded clocks that will have this problem. It's certainly not as bad as the Y2K bug, but I expect to see a lot of incorrect clocks around March.

I am pumped up! I think this is a great thing, I hope they don't turn it back.

They probably will for newer digital cameras, but for 5 year old TV's and VCR's? Fat chance.

people acrually set the time on their VCRs?

Don't forget the little old ladies who don't have DVR's and like to record their soaps :)

of all the stupid things Microsoft pushes out with the windows auto update (IE), shouldn't this patch be as well?

How will this save energy? It's still dark at like 7:30am, meaning it's going to be that dark at 8:30am? The energy we'll "save" at night will just be used during the morning.

They supposedly do for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, but Windows 2000 users are out of luck.
