DSS 80 Speakers in WinME

I recently upgraded? a machine to WinME with a clean install. While putting things back together, I discovered that the installation software that comes with the Microsoft Digital Sound System 80 speakers will not work with WinME. The install reports this:

<< The Microsoft DSS 80 speaker drivers that you are attempting to install are earlier versions than those in this operating system. Please use the drivers in the operating system for the best performance. >>

Sure the speakers work in WinME, but the cool equalizer and surround effects are just not there. Has anyone found a way to install the DSS 80 software onto a WinME machine? I checked the MS site and there is no article on this that I could find. Thanks.

uh, I have both these pieces of gear you're talking about and no I don't know how to fix it but I'll give you a bump.
I read someone complaining about that in a computer magazine, along the lines of that microsoft were saying WinME were supporting gear, but that with the functionality so curtailed in this way, this "support" didn't count.

Microsoft's Response

They were nice speakers.

They discontinued the speakers. I had them for 6 months and the power supply went on them. Since they were discontinued Microsoft couldn't replace them so they gave me a full refund. I liked those speakers too.

Thanks for the pointer to the MS info on this. Looks like if I want to use the software that comes with the DSS 80 speakers in WinME I have to:

a) turf WinME
b) install Win98
c) install DSS 80 software
d) install WinME over Win98

Aye carumba, what an ordeal to get the equalizer toys back :frown:
