Ok, so I am running on Road Runner now, and it sucks. The DL speeds are bad, and to add insult to injury, the price is over 20 dollars/month. (my DL speed is 720Kbps)
So I was thinking of switching to DSL AT&T, where the DL speed is 3.0Mbps. Granted, I know DL speeds won't be that ridiculously fast, but they'll be faster than what I have now. That and it is less than 20$/month.

Ok, now the down sides. DSL connects from the phone lines, so I'll have to get a splitter, which allows me access to the phone, and the Modem for DSL at the same time. Another thing is, how good is the reliablility?

Any comments or negative feedback? Thanks alot.

By pretty good...what do you mean? Reliability for Cable RR is rather bad. 3/5 stars.

I am using BellSouth DSL forthe last two years, soon to be ATT. I am paying around $33 for 1.5 mb down <plus $20 for basic phone since no naked DSL here>.

At the beginning, I have static noise and disconnect but after the tech did the repair <twice>, everything is ok.

I guess I am fairly happy with it. I wish I could pay less <$20 or less for 1.5 mb> and able to do naked DSL.

I've been SBC Yahoo/AT&T customer for over 3 years, first a 1500/128, then 3000/384, now 6000/768 plan. I pay $40 a month.

It's been great all the time until I moved half a mile to another apt complex. Here, Internet will drop couple times a week for like 3 min then reconnect. In short, it depends on your phone lines (how far to closest hub and how crappy are lines themselves) and closest "hub" which converts signals from phone line to optics.
Splitter is a downside? lmao. Splitter will be provided by AT&T along with modem.
Gaming online is total blast, since I have little dedicated line from my modem to optics hub, no one is sucking my bandwidth with P2P crap (this is the case with cable). My pings on closest servers (I am in Houston, servers in Austin or Dallas, about 200-300 miles) are sub-20 and often under 10 milliseconds!!! Other players' vary from 30 to 100+ ms. //Hmm why do I get most frags in every other game? They cry LPB!!! LPB!!! Low Ping Bastard!!

Bottom line: Switch to DSL, you'll never go back to cable.

edit: his $20 offer is a promo for 1 year most likely

I have had AT&T (Formerly SBC, formerly PacBell) DSL for, I think, 8 years. Very happy with their reliability and service. When I did have any problems, it was usually resolved in one call.

Is getting a splitter that big of a deal?

Dude thinks he has to buy his own...even if he does there should be one under $20.

I have Bellsouth (now AT&T) Extreme DSL. It's faster than my old Cox (now charter) cable internet. My self-install package came with several filters which allow me to use the phone and the DSL connection at the same time with no issue. I don't know how you're getting 3.0 for <$20 though. I pay ~$35/month for my internet access.

I've got AT&T DSL (formerly SBC Global) at 3Mb/384kb. For a while the DSL modem was dropping connection all the time, a few times per hour, and was aggravating. But for the last month or so it no longer drops the connection so I guess AT&T must've noticed and fixed something on their end, because I never called them about it. Now I don't keep having to power cycle the router anymore to get my connection back.

When i had verizon 768K DSL it was rock solid, but when I upgraded to the fastest service, it kept disconnecting me every 2 minutes.

I had Charter cable, then switched to Windstream (Alltel here) DSL. Cheaper and better speeds, and so far no outages.

Entirely varies from area to area.
For example I have RR Cable (like OP) and I have NEVER had down time (except power outages) and dload speeds are 600KBps from (their) news servers (which are actually newshosting)

the only thing better about cable is lower latencies for online games, it matters in shooter games like CS source :p other than that, its about the same.

I'm in a newer area that still does not have DSL. If it would only get here I could finally get rid of Comcast entirely, get DSL and some type of Sat TV.

disagreed. when some @sshat pulls 2gb of anime a day, your latencies will suck big time cuz you share cable with them...

edit: Here's a nice read about DSL vs. Cable

If you are too far from "station hub" your speeds will suck.

Heck, I'll take slowest DSL package (1500/128) over 40mbit cable shared by pirates who download and upload sh1t all day long, nonstop.

Our company sells and installs DSL. It's the most bang for your buck on an Internet connection, and they prove very reliable provided your phone lines are in good shape. They do have splitter filters (one side phone, one side DSL) available, so check with your provider about that. Enjoy!

Every DSL setup I have installed comes with a splitter an a half dozen filters (far more than most need).

ATT's pricing is $14.95-$19.95 for 1.5Mb around here. I have 6.0 for $27.95 on their one year plan (I got it through them instead of my company because it's $2 cheaper/month :) ).

My ping is unchanged in ET, I only play on servers that I can get less than 100ms, and I'm playing on the same servers I played on when I had cable (I've been observing between 35-75ms mostly)

I've had WIndstream (Alltel), for about 6 years now with no major problems. The speed gets a little slower in the afternoon, but overall I'm happy with it.

I was thinking about switching to Road Runner, but one of our neighbors has it and its a lot slower than my DSL connection. DSL is also about $15 a month cheaper here.

Here ( DFW ) we have the $12.99 deal with SBC/Yahoo/ATT/Whatever for 1.5Megabit down and 256Kbit up for the past year. I think its been down once or twice for about an hour at a time. Came with a Speedstream 4100 Siemens modem and a bunch of filters. The install package was $49 I think with a $49 rebate, so they charge you then you get your money back later. The D/L speed was just under what was advertised, coming it at ~1.3-1.4Megabit/s but the U/L was at 256Kbit/s. Pings are great with CS:S - single digit to ~60ms.
