have finally gotten dsl into my neighborhood and have a dedicated dsl line.

Although It has a wireless ability,
I have hardwired the modem to the uplink on my high speed hub and then out to each machines network card, so now have dsl through the hub on my windows xp machines.
I have trend av, webroot for spyware, windows firewall, and have added kerio personal FW.

Both of these machines duel boot one into ubuntu and one into fedora core3.
Linux doesn't seem able to use the dsl though since. It looks like everythings set up for dialing? But I am sure it can the dsl gateway itself is identified as being linux.
Will linux connection be simplified with a router? Will any router work or are there better ones?
Also XP has no problem with the connection but am I crazy for running it without a router or should I be fairly safe with my current setup.

this is the modem I have.

thx for any meaningful imput.

Gratz on the DSL

Couple of questions. You mention "Hub". Do you mean a switch, and Old School Hub, a router, or what.
2. Windows works, meaning you have multiple external IP's? Do those DHCP, or are they manually assigned?
3. For most direct to DSL modems, you need either PPPOE for authentication, or the modem must do PPPOE.

Yes a router would help, although you could take your ubuntu box, put pppoe client on and use IPTAbles to get a good firewall.

its DHCP and they show consecitive ip #'s not identical

this is all I can find on the site:
How do I know if I have a PPPoE configuration?

Answer
If you have Qwest DSL, you can follow the default installation instructions provided to you with your OneFlex? VoIP Adapter. If any of the following applies to you, your ISP uses a PPPoE connection and you will need the Easy Installation Wizard provided to you on the CD or this installation guide:

You must enter a username and password to access the Internet (no i don't)
You use software such as WinPOET or Enternet300 to access the Internet (no I don't)
You have to double-click on an icon located on your desktop to access the Internet rather than your browser
(I have to click icon to launch browser but its already connected and I don't need browser to do other things...ie...a virus database update)

so from that, I am guessing the answer is No?

your saying thats the easiest way to get linux to see it?

post the output of ipconfig /all on a windows box, and then post your /etc/conf.d/net and ifconfig eth0 from your Ubuntu (I don't do FC)

Your Modem seems to be a Modem/Router combo.

I.e. you are already Routed.

that router apparently is just for the wireless. I have it hard wired

well if thats true, and I will take your word for it jack.
then I guess I am routed because thats what it is.

nevermind I got it to work...thanks anyway

edit: well kind of work......its connecting to andantech very quickly and on my second attempt downloaded all new headers for synaptic really fast but on every other webpage so far its just endlessly trying to load and going nowhere. will keep playing with it.
