I want to get DSL and drop my local phone company but is this possible?
Do i need to have a phone company for local service to get DSL?
Are there any alternatives if this is not possible?

Thanks in advance,
Shuten

Well, I kind of doubt it, but every time I say that somebody comes up with a way to do it.

What is your idea, you'll get rid of your local line and just make internet calls? Or you'll only use your cell phone maybe? Maybe you could get the cheapest possible local service and couple it with dsl.

Your alternatives, of course, are things like Cable or Satellite, if you can get access to them.

Yeah, I would be interested in this too--well not for myself actually, but for my sister who I need to help setup in her new apt at college. She and her roommates will use their cell phones so there's no point in getting a regular phone. But they want to get high speed Internet and the only option I know of in Davis, CA is DSL (ATT Broadband doesn't have cable modem there yet...) Satellite seems expensive and probably a pain to setup. If I can't find someone who will just do DSL, I guess they'll just have to gett the cheapest phone service from PacBell.....

I would be using my cell as my primary number.
I'm thinking that I will probably end up getting att broadband
since if you couple it with cable tv it is $80/month or you can
get it for $45/month and get first month free I believe.
so it only like $10 /month extra for me if i drop the local phone company.

Also I posted a little while back about if it is possible to split att broadband to multiple
computers without paying extra like they want? If I just buy a router can I configure
everything to run so that I can use multiple computers on it?

Any ideas suggestions would be great.

Yes, the router should work. Check the Anandtech Networking FAQs for details.

DSL is usually a 1 year commitment. Cable often has no time commitment.

Thanks rw120555 .

Not what I was hoping but atleast it answered my question.

On a side note has anyone dealt with ATT broadband in atlanta?
Just wondering about speeds.

Bear in mind that this is a big country (the US). So in various locals services and solutions are not the same.

In most case when there is no Tel. service at use, but the lines are used (like for DSL). The Telco will charge for line maintenance.

At the end the difference between rock bottom Tel. service, and the maintenance charges is only few $$$.
