Is it possible to get DSL service and have no regular phone line? I want to get DSL in the apartment I am moving into because we need a somewhat adequate upload speed, which cable just never gives me.

If it makes any difference the city is West Lafayette, IN (Purdue University).

Thanks

Do you mean like having no local/long distance on the service but have DSL? I believe you can but I'm not for certain. That's something you should call the West Lafayette phone provider about

I couldn't get DSL from anywhere without local service from Ameritech. I suspect it's a legal barrier and not a technological one, but I don't really know.

i think you could try and get a line from covad or an isp that uses covad lines
covad runs a separate line out to your house even if you have a line already....
you might want to check DSLReports for qualification and you could ask on their forums too

I have Covad (direct) - they required an Ameritech line.

Your answer is NO. It shouldn't be legal but the FCC mandated and made it legal (with bullying by the Phone Co's and they bought the vote) for the Phone Companies to require that you purchase and pay for Voice line even if you will not use it, a legal subsidy. Not until enough Americans protest will this change.

Yes you can. As I am.

But im using sdsl over a dedicated pair. In other words its not shared.

Most businesses use sdsl, as most ISP require they get it over adsl.
Cost more too.

Only thing is without a phone # its a pain in the ass to get setup.
Cause they use the phone # to see if you qualify and to measure your distance from CO etc.
You also have to have an ISP that offers that capability in your area.

When I originally ordered the sdsl service I had a phone #, the sdsl was hooked up on the other pair (telephone line).
After a few months I cancelled my phone service (already knew it wouldn't affect my dsl).

I originally went with Britsys.net and they just use NewEdge Networks.
Im am now using Vigoris.net because Britsys.net had a falling out with NewEdge Networks.

NewEdge Networks

So Yes you can get DSL service without having a phone #, but of course the phone line (medium) has to be present.

In other words Im paying for my sdsl internet connection through my ISP (which is not my phone company) and Im not paying what would be my phone company if i had phone service.
