DSL vs Cable

From what I've read, the speed advantage of Cable versus DSL is not that great if you're using the most basic cable internet plan (which I am). What are the differences in cost? I don't use cable television, and my bill is about $50/month. I don't know anything about DSL

Long edit:
In my area I only have the option of Cox Cable or AT&T DSL. I've checked the other options that I can think of (Verizon, road runner, etc.), but these appear to be the only ones offering anything.

The building is old, so I don't know how reliable the phone lines are. The cable connection has been great, but it wasn't installed very long ago.

The difference in price would be $30/month. I'd be going from 6Mbps to 1.5Mbps. I have no idea how far I am from the central hub, so I have no idea what my actual speed will be. I torrent and I game. Will a maximum 1.5Mbps with potential slow down caused by hub distance (since I have no idea where the hub is) ruin gaming for me? I have a strong computer, so I'm really only concerned with the potential download rates for each provider.

But there is some confusion. I don't have an active phone line through anyone. The plans at AT&T make it sound like I'll have to pay extra to have a phone line and that it's not included with the plan. Does anyone know? The minimum local phone line is $22.95, which would actually make DSL more expensive. The "bundle deal" for local phone line and DSL doesn't say anything about decreasing the price, just that it's convenient to have both services through the same company.

depends on where you live. if you call the cable company and say you are switching to DSL they will probably cut you a deal to stay with them.

do it, the only thing youll miss is torrent speeds, but in everyday surfing web downloading not a big deal

if you are a gamer, multiple people at the house still doesnt hurt it

actually uploading per plan is better on DSL, but not downloading

I just switched to dsl from comcast, I got att premium package (6 mb down, 768k up) for 27 a month, cable was around 45-46

comcast was pretty inconsistent , during the day it would lag sometimes

DSL varies a ton. You can get 1.5mbs DSL or 5mb/s DSL or 7.5mb/s DSL... or 256kb/s DSL. I get the 7.5mb deal, and it's like $35 a month.

Edit- I get it from Qwest. Also, I have their phone service.

I get 1.5 from Sprint for 29$ a month, and it's just as fast as the T1 at work so I'm not complaining.

for me, cable is cheaper than dsl and its a SIGNIFICANTLY faster line....

I pay ~ $50/mo for a 10/1 line on brighthouse networks (cable)

If i were to switch to verizon, its $35/mo for the 3/256k DSL + I would have to add a local basic phone line ($15+taxes)

There's Road Runner Lite, and then there's the 5MB Earthlink connection I have. I pay $40/month if I remember correctly.

Im on a 1.5 meg dsl line that i pay 29 a month for from sbc. For 6 months i was only paying 16 though. For normal internet and gaming i dont notice a single difference from the faster connections. Slower torrents is kinda annoying though.

Keep in mind, most DSL providers require a phone line. I think Verizon is the only one that provides "Naked DSL". I may be wrong though.

They are all going to have to do so according to a court ruling.

That's great news! Do you know when?

Lol for me its the reverse I was paying about $30 a month for DSL, then I heard about the $14 a month price for new customers so I called them and tried to get them to extend my contract at $14, they wouldnt but they gave me it at $16 a month.

SBC isn't available in my area, unfortunately. That'd be pretty slick though, as I'm far from fully utilizing my download capabilities with cable.

Do you know if AT&T offers it with a line? Their website isn't very clear on this. You definitely need to order a phone line with your DSL service, but they won't say how much their "bundle" deal is. My thoughts are that it's probably just both services lumped together at normal prices with no discount so that you end up paying more than you would for cable internet anyway.

I think I'll be staying with Cable. I only asked because I'm moving this Saturday and need to set up my internet service, but since Cable is cheaper + faster given the available services, there's really no reason to switch. This is after a $10/month discount for the first year of DSL, otherwise it'd be $40/month + $22/month for phone versus $50/month for cable internet with same basic cable TV channels.

Good choice to stay with cable. Unless you're within, I think 6000 feet on DSL, your max speed is 1.5mb. At least it is with Verizon.

I had dsl before,

I have Roadrunner cable, internet now.

I call at least once a year, and whine, that the $45 a month is too much,
that I can switch to DSL, but like Roadrunner;
and for 3 months they drop it to $29.95 per month.

The roadrunner is Much faster.

i would never ever ever downgrade to DSL unless it was FIOS.

and yes, you need a phone line, which you will have to pay extra for.

Just dumped Roadrunner for dsl. RR is beginning to collapse here, yet they keep cranking the speeds up over network reliability. 6/1 vdsl with 170 channels of iptv from AT&T. SO far it is better, faster and cheaper.
