I know this has been probably beaten to death...

Last night I was playing my brother in law (call of duty) and we noticed that my speed was slower then his. Through out the whole game.

He has DSL and I have Cable modem. Why is that? I always thought Cable modem was faster?

Can you explain good and bad about DSL vs Cable.

Im about to move and I think I might get DSL .....good or bad idea???

TIA

dsl is more consistent. thats what i like about it. cable fluctuates dependign on others on the network most dsl, has set bandwidth for you.

in the uk this is far from the case. dsl is supplied by bt they supply the central pipe into thier network (at a cost of course) which matches the "tail" that the isp has on their internet side.

BT stipulate 50:1 contention for home and 20:1 for office cons so on a 2 meg pipe thats 200 512k connectons at 50:1.

Come evening time if all those 200 peeps hit that pipe at once your gonna suffer as much as any cable user will.

it will always be relative to the avaliable bandwidth. so you should be asking who has the fattest pipes with the most free space in thier network.

not cable vs dsl :)

oh and as for being constitent in the uk its crap exchange probs the whole time and that damm phone guy

What I found with my cable vs. DSL ( I have had both) is that with cble you get faster downloads and higer ping while DSL offers slower download and lower ping.

The latency of the DSL network seems to be slower than that of the cable.

Cnet used to have a little tool that asked you questions on what you planned to do with your connection. Downloading alot get cable, playing games get DSL

I use DSL because its cheaper and faster than RR in my area, I think they are both fine technically, but some providers try to screw you. Shop around, that's my motto...

Since DSL is not available here, I suffer with Comcast cable. :D FWIW, it works fine, and I've had minimal issues with any slowdowns unless they have network problems. I think I've had a total of about 4-5 days of total outage in three years, and several weeks of intermintent outages while they chased some issue in their local gateways. It's not perfect, but it beats the snot out of dial-up! :D

of course I shoudl clarify. eventually at some point yoru traffic hits others traffic and speeds will vary depending on this. however at that point it is usually the same traffic wheter it is cable or DSL. but cable from the provider to your house will be shared with the neighborhood while dsl form the provider to your house is not.

regardless, shop around dslreports.com findo ut what others in your area are using.
