I've had Pacbell --> SBC Yahoo --> AT&T DSL since 1999 or so, and I was supposed to be getting 6 mbps. I tested a few days ago and had 4.2 mbps DL and 0.61 UL on my ethernet connected desktop using the Pacbell supplied Alcatel 1000 modem. I just switched to Sonic.net Fusion, and the changeover was Monday (2 days ago). They told me that being 6150' from the CO, I should be getting over 10 mbps DL, maybe up to 15 mbps. However, my speeds actually dropped and I"m getting 2.4 mbps DL and 0.24 mbps UL
Before changeover: 4.2 mbps DL / 0.61 mbps UL
After changeover: 2.4 mbps DL / 0.24 mbps UL
Sonic.net told me that to enjoy the most speed I should upgrade the Alcatel 1000 ADSL modem to an ADSL 2+ modem and I had bought one directly from Sonic.net, the ZTE831II and I installed it when the changeover happened on Monday. I didn't have a connection until a tech helped me configure my Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 router to use DHCP instead of the PPPoE it was using for the AT&T DSL.
The technician who helped me over the phone configure the modem had me connect the modem directly to the jack on the outside connection box in an effort to determine if the problem is before or after the box, but to her puzzlement, she didn't get a signal, so she initiated the process to send out a technician to determine what's up. Sonic is sending out a technician in 6 days who will test and try to determine what the problem is.
Is it possible/likely the ZTE831 modem is defective? What is likely causing this problem? It seems strange to me that:
1. the speeds are actually slower
2. no DSL connection was detected when plugging the modem directly into the connection box
