DSL tweaks: need tuttelage please

I have SWB DSL. It's fast and I'm happy. But I'm not happy unless I'm tinkering with something! 😉 (I think everyone on this forum suffers from this same disease...so I'm sure I'm not alone!)

DSL Reports consistently shows DL speeds of 900kb - 1.1mbs, which is pretty darn good. My downloads, however, are consistently between 80 - 140 kbs, which is still pretty good. I haven't forgotten about my 2.5kbs DL speeds w/my old dialup connection....I still wake up screaming.....I love broadband!

I've read about the MTU stuff (and other acronyms I can't remember right now. All this stuff is in the registry, correct? I've done very minor regedits before. Mostly for videocard stuff. I'm not embarrased to admit that I'm afraid of screwing up my precious DSL speeds, but I'm not afraid to try!

Can someone please suggest where to look, and for what numbers, and what to change to see if it works better? I ran the DSL Reports suggested tweak engine thingee, but I don't understand what all those terms are. Thanks and have a nice day.

I your download is 80-140 KB/sec. (Byte), then you have more speed of what most people have.

Hi Jack,

Yeah, I know I have a pretty decent connection. My neighborhood's wiring just recently (two months ago) got upgraded for DSL capability. All new switches and stuff. I pay for it though; $50/mo. Ouch. I suffered for a long time w/dialup. I'm just trying to get every last byte out of my $50/mo, that's all. (Bigger, better, faster, more!)

The only DSL tweak that's worth a damn is the Windows Receive Window settings in the registry.

Do the DSLreports tools.

Also, you said that your downloads were something like 80 kbs. Are you sure you aren't reading 80 Kilo Bytes per second rather than 80 kilo bits per second?

From what you said were your speed test results at DSLreports, i.e > 900 kilo bits per second, it seems that 80 kilo bytes per second is still slow.

It may be the server at the download site was slow, or was congested, or you started downloading during internet rush hour, all of which affects your download performance.
