DSL Terminology

We have Qwest DSL and when we moved in April they were selling 7Mbps for our new neighborhood, but the connection was shoddy. The first tech bumped us down to 5Mbps to get her test meter showing a stable connection, but over the next week my VPN connection to work was still intermittent. The second tech was much more knowledgeable and he ran different tests that didn't show stability until they bumped my connection down to 3Mbps. He told me the copper from my house goes all the way to a high school a couple miles away before it converts to fiber, which is why the connection was so shoddy. He couldn't believe they were selling 7Mbps in the neighborhood.

However, he told me the major road construction happening close by gave Qwest a good excuse to bury a new fiber line to my neighborhood, and once the road construction was finished that new line would be available and I should call up Qwest and ask them to transfer me to this new node.

I was wondering if anyone could tell me what this node is called, so that when I call Qwest I will be able to ask specifically for the right thing. I have had bad luck with them "interpreting" things in the past, and it takes multiple calls/techs to resolve the ordeal.

Well, the tech didn't know anything about a new fiber node or DSLAM or whatever I chose to call it. He said nothing above 3Mbps is available to me. Lame. Oh well.
