DSL *splitter* Q's

I've been reading about how a DSL splitter (not just a normal filter) can increase your dsl speed.

how much increase?
do you have to install it at the POTS box? can you install it on just one jack inside somehow? can you install it without even opening a junction box or anything?

I had DSL for more than a year and I've never heard of such a thing.

There is no such thing as "increasing speeds on YOUR side of the box." You have a line coming into your apartment/home. That line is hard wired/set at the head-end for XYZ speeds...and that's the end of the story, period.

I've heard of it in the past but I believe its illegal and if not againts most providers tos. So if they find out your gona get your service cut off in a snap

I don't have a story link, but there was a guy in a town down the road about 2 months ago that got busted for this and is being sued because he slowed down the service for everyone else. He had SBCGlobal and was using the additional speed for downloads of DVDs. It took SBC about a month to figure it out.

For residential DSL phone service, the house's main junction box can be optionally replaced with a DSL line splitter junction box. A dedicated "DSL-only line" can then be run from the DSL junction box to the DSL data jack next to the computer. Therefore, no DSL line filters are needed for any of the POTS lines in the same building.
The main drawback is the $150 or so extra cost of installation.

You're referencing a POTS (plain old telephone service) splitter, and if you have a monitored home alarm system they are usually required. Verizon installed one for me free of charge since I was using their DSL service at the time. However, a POTS splitter will not "increase your dsl speed".

$150?.....Nah...the splitter cost me about $40 and it took about an hour to install. As far as your speeds increasing...it can in fact increase your speeds by increasing your noise margins which can get you closer to the rated speeds of your line. The main purpose of the splitter is take internal wiring out of the equation by separating the voice and data lines at the NID. Internal wiring can be the cause for decreased speeds, loss of sync, etc due to increased noise on your line.

Search *bay for "Siecor Splitter* and you'll see the external one I used.

Also, it's perfectly legal.
