DSL sharing between houses via Wireless

RU482

Lifer
OK, my neighbor and I have been talking about getting DSL. His house is about 50meters away from mine. It's a direct shot, no trees or anything. How possible would it be to share one connection via a wireless router?

Any ideas?

so just the router and regular cards probably won't do the trick?

Would a CAT5, 10bT or 100bT line perform OK over that distance??

o yeah, cable will definately work better and faster... much faster.... Max distance for Cat5 cable is 100M.

redly1, running a copper wire between two different structures with different electrical systems (read: two houses) is very dangerous unless you know what you are doing. Use wireless, as it will be the cheap and simple way to not have to deal with those issues.

Properly? lol. At the distance your talking about a wireless link would be perfectly proper, easy, and reliable. You don't need any amps. Since you have line of sight you'd only need a couple of AP's that have a bridging function, two decent gain directional antennas for reliablility, and perhaps a short transmission cable on each side, or pigtails. Might take a little work depending on the bridges location, how your going to mount the antennas etc...but will work well for sharing a broadband connection.

WAP11s from linksys and a router on each end do the trick 🙂

I am doing it here and serving about 4 pepople. two in my house and two on the other side.

50 meters with no obstructions should be a piece of cake, put the WAP antennas in windows visible to each other and I'll bet it works just fine. I've gone farther than that with several walls inbetween.

"Performance at 2nd house probably wont be worth it"

BS. For sharing an internet braodband connection even a stable 2 Mb association would be plenty. Perhaps if the incoming account is OOL or some other very high bandwidth provider. At the distance stated in the original post you could expect a marginal connection with the default dipoles and an excellent one with a couple of cheap directionals.

Can't hurt to try, can it? Probably cheaper than 2 DSL accounts anyway, but wireless can be a case-per-case thing, so your setup might work great, or martind1 my be right on target.

But I do agree, no copper lines between the houses...if you are going to wire it, optical only...

I still hate wireless. I am also find it quite disturbing that you people are so cheap as to attempt this.

btw, have you considered the security risks of allowing a wireless network like this?

"so your setup might work great, or martind1 my be right on target."

My setup is several hundred wireless links over the last six years. With line of sight, proper distance numbers and decent equipment and good engineering any wireless setup can be solid as a rock. From what the original poster is stating, it sounds fairly easy and has an excellent chance of being more than adequate for his needs.

If you already have a wireless router at your house, then just build one of these for your neighbor, connect it to a wireless card or USB adapter, and aim it at your house.

I recommend carefully checking your cabling. You'll need a pigtail which allows you to connect an external antenna to your neighbor's wireless card. If you don't have line of sight (a window facing your house) within the immediate vicinity of his computer, you will need a low-loss extension cable which will carry the signal from your neighbor's wireless card to your antenna.

Another thing to be careful about is your choice of wireless card. I recommend getting a USB card for your neighbor rather than a PCI card. This will give you a bit more flexibility in placing the equipment, and will minimize electrical interference. You will need to get a wireless card that is compatible with NetStumbler. NetStumbler is used to precisely aim your external antenna for maximum reception. I recommend the Linksys WUSB11 2.5. There is a newer 2.6 version of this adapter, but you want to get 2.5 because there is an MMCX jack inside which allows you to attach a pigtail without any soldering.

Good luck with your project!

You can PM me if you have questions.

You are aware that doing so is illegal in most all states

If your talking about sharing a broadband connection then yeah, he might want to check his TSA. If your talking about setting up a 2.4, unlicensed, microwave link, perhaps you could shed some light on why you think that.
