so, i have two computers to connect to dsl. one has been connected, and just got the other one. so i have a modem already. but from what ive read, you cant have two connected to a modem. so im guessing i need to get a router, and just plug in the dsl, to split to the two computers? how do i set it up on two 98 machines? and is there anyway it will work with two modems?

yes, you will need a router to share internet access.

since your win98 machine is pretty old, you might need to install a network card. they're about $15-20 at bestbuy.

power off all your devices (router, modem, computers). connect the router to the modem, then connect the two computers to the router. power on the devices in this order: modem (wait until all the lights turn solid), turn on your router, then turn on your computers.

No, you can plug the modem into any phone jack, but only if it has a filter on it. You plug the router into the modem.

and i don't have to have a firewall do it

The router will run NAT which provides reasonable security.

The router will have a built in switch (smart hub) with 4 ports in it.

i thought only the jacks that didnt have the router or modem on it had filters, and that the one that did, just went wall, modem, router, computers(no filter)?
