DSL questions

Ive never used DSL before, but Im thinking of upgrading from my current cable crap.

How is the account activated? Is activation related to my broadband router/modem? I.E is the MAC ID registered by the ISP? Or can I plug it into a new modem on the existing DSL line and use a username and password to log in?

I haven't seen any DSL connections that required MAC registration, but I'm sure it's possible. One problem is those crappy providers using PPPoE. Ew.

ridiculous part is that my ISP is charging me 250$ for a modem!! Ill only be able to get a modem once installation is done. So I want to know if I will be able to configure it myself.

Ill be calling them up to confirm tommorrow morning. I had previously asked them if I could buy their modem and they said I would be able to do so. They mentioned that they must be compatible with their systems. They also said they use "US" based modems. They give:
Alcatel
Great speed
Huwaei (with routing facility)
Planet (with routing facility)

When I asked them if specefic models of modems (I gave them the make and model) I got no reply. Their salespersons on the phone aren't too knoweledgeble.

So in short, does this mean that I will be able to use a router of my choice if indeed they donot register MACs and give username/passwords?

Alcatel is standard DSL.

Just buy your own Modem and log in.

SBC supplies Siemens model 4100 DSL modems (U.S.A.).
Maybe someone in the U.S. could purchase one and send to you?
They're only about $70 at Best Buy stores.
The only difference between:
a cable modem w/router
vs.
DSL modem w/router
would be:
Setting up the DSL account requires: logging in to the router (usually: 192.168.0.1, via web browser) and
adding a login name and password for the new DSL account. The PC ethernet card's TCP/IP
settings are left on the default "Detect Settings Automatically".
