DSL question

I always wanted to know this... I'm out of area according to SBC (phone provider), but a city 4 miles away has cable/DSL everywhere (pop. of about 3200 people). I want to know if i set up the high-speed modem if i could get broadband, just at a speed that's lower than advertised...

Thanks 🙂

some places have IDSL, which is only 144 bps, IDSL can be done at greater ranges from the CO than ADSL

but there is still a range limit and someone has to offer the service

but take earthlink DSL, wouldn't it still be faster than dial-up even though it's out of area?

My guess is that it wouldn't work well over the spec'd distance otherwise the Earthlink money whores would be offering it in your area.

it's funny...we have a PO box for mail (small town) and earthlink did call us and said "hey, DSL is available in your area, do you want to sign up for it?" so we did, and 2 weeks later they called and said they made a mistake...so now after being so excited for those 2 weeks I really want broadband (no satellite internet, it's too expensive for us)
