I signed up to get DSL on my second line...

In my home, both lines are carried on the same physical telephone wire. (Which is split in the room with the computer, so line 2 oes to computer, line 1 to phone... In other rooms, there are two line phones installed that just take the one physical wire carrying both lines)

I had hoped that since the filters that you need to install have 4 copper "contacts"(im sure theres better a word for the little wires in the phone jack), that they would filter from both lines, but that has not been the case... When the DSL modem is on, I cannot access line two from the phones that carry both lines from the same physical wire (Line 1 is fine, but on the second line you can hear both the dial tone and the sound of a modem).

Would you suggest I try to have it activated on my first line instead?
or is there an easier solution for this problem?

yes, get the phone co to install fresh copper for you so you have a separate circuit for the dsl

they should have done that in the first place
they were just too lazy

It would have been less complicated if you had DSL on the first line. The filters you got was probably for a 1 line phone - check with your source for the filters (ask if they save a 2 line filter that filters the second line or both lines). If it's on the first line and you find that you don't have a need for the dial up modem, you can then cancel your second line and save the cost of the second line.

Otherwise, check if your 2 line phones can take 2 physically separated lines - input for line 1 and 2 (The phone I have can has inputs for 2 physical lines). If so, get a 2 line spliter that separate the 2 lines into 2 physical jack (the spliter should have markings for line 1 and line 2. Connect the filter on line 2 before connecting it to the phone.

Goodluck

Well I want to keep the second line for a fax line.....

Do you know how much/how complicated it would be to have the phone company install a second circuit? I live in a really old house....

Also, Ive tried putting a splitter in the wall jack then a filter in the line 2, but i still couldnt access line 2...

Thanks for all the help

Through the use of some three way splitters (L1, L2, L1+L2) I have around, I have been able to get some access to line 2...

Now the only problem is that I have a wall phone that takes a single wire carrying both lines, and I need to filter line 2...

Does anyone know of a two line wall mount that filters line 2 (or both lines)?
(Does anyone know where I can buy Z-Blockers or other DSL filters?)

Thanks
