just a couple quickies:

how close do you have to be to a tower or local station to get a decent feed...

and also, how would you go about finding out information like this..., as to where the towers are..etc

thanks 🙂

The answer to your first question requires a question itself. Which type of DSL line are you considering? The different types of DSL services have different speed/distance requirements. ADSL lines (one of the most popular) offer great speeds however you usually have to be less then 18,000 feet from a telco. SDSL usually offers lower speeds but the distance requirement is more lax then ADSL. Typical DSL lines do not use "towers" they use your existing copper line that comes from the telco. Wireless DSL relies on towers and the distance requirements vary greatly depending on the equipment the ISP is using. I would highly suggest heading over to DSLReports.com. The site will be able to tell you roughly how far you are from your local telco and which providers offer service in your area.

What CCIty Installer said. DSLReports is one of the best sites for DSL info. Read through some of the FAQ's and learn about the technology and you'll be able to make a better, more informed decision.

DSL runs on your copper telephone line from the Telephone Company's Central Office -- OR -- from a remote terminal. Only your local Telephone Company can authoritively tell you whether or not you can get DSL on your telephone line. (Your telephone line may not be copper to the C.O..)

DSL has a design limit of 17,500 feet -- cable, not straight line or driving distance. My home DSL is running 672/160 Kbps on a 20,400 foot cable loop. It is a good cable. I have seen people at 5000 feet being unable to get DSL to work because of bad cable.

Rule of thumb is under 2 miles fast, under 1 mile smokin' -- but nothing is guaranteed.
