DSL problems

I got a call from a friend of mine today, and he says that his DSL connection slows down his computer, then ultimately it freezes. He's using a high-end Sony VAIO, and it used to run like a champ.

When he plugs in his modem, the first thing he notices is that his uploads immediately skyrocket, and he's not even using the internet. Then, after about 5 mins, his computer comes to crawl, and the system monitor reports 98% CPU usage, and not long after, it crashes and he has to restart.

He said that he updated everything from the MS update site. However, one wierd thing is that his McAfee stopped working after his DSL got hooked up. Could it be possible that he got some sort of virus from his old dialup days, and it's now ravaging his DSL connection? Is there something else that Verizon forgot to tell him? Or should he just reinstall everything?

Thanks in advance for any help you guys and gals can give me.

Sounds like his machine is infected with Malware and probably Trojans.

See if he can get Adaware and Spybot on the machine for the Malware.

Then download AVG Antivirus for the Trojans.

Or it is nothing to do with DSL and Internet/Network.

The VAIOs get to a typical state after a while.
I.e., the CPU get Hot and there is not enough cooling and the power system throttle down the computer.
