I'm trying to find out the culprit of a small network causing it to die randomly.

There is a dsl connection and a speedstream 5200 (iirc) modem. Next is a router. Before it was a wired belkin router and now a WRT54G (v5 unfortunately) that I just hooked up 2 days ago.

The internet would not work at first after hooking the router up. I logged into the speedstream modema and turned off the built in DHCP server. The internet then worked great.

What I'm wondering is if I should turn that DHCP back on and turn DHCP off in the router. The previous router had DHCP turned on as far as I know. I really think the modem is bad and the ISP does not want to replace it even though the just rent it.

Just leave DHCP on the router, it's probably the best way.

Nothing stopping you buying another DSL modem yourself if it is the culprit... maybe you should try another unit for a day and see if it solves the problem.

Well I thought about this some more and having DHCP enabled on both was the problem before because the router has a specified IP of 192.168.x.x and then DHCP was trying to assign an IP to the router when it was already specified. I'm going to try turning DHCP back on for the modem and off for the router.
