DSL Problems I believe

Recently I moved out of my university dorms and into an Apt. Complex. I have DSL through SBC. It's 300 speed (kb/mb or whatever)

I have scanned for spyware and viruses. Nothing. But internet pages don't load up sometimes, my AIM signs off all the time. And when I play games i ping around 500. Which shouldn't be happening. My roomates ping stays under 100 usually. Obviously this means something is wrong with my computer.

I don't really know what to say except this is what I have:

Motherboard : ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe
Processor: AMD Athlon XP 3000+
Memory: 2 GB Crucial 3200 DDR

Anything else you all need to know?

Sharing the same DSL connection?
Using any firewalls on your computer?
Are you on wireless?
Are you 3mbit down or 384 down?
What type of modem do you have? paired with which router?
Can you ping www.yahoo.com 10 times and post the results here?

Your system specs arn't that important for this. What's more important is the network configuration. Are you connected through a router, hub, or another computer? Are you connected wirelessly?

Go to a support website and dowload a file. Don't run the software, just save it to disk and note what your download speed actually is.

Try booting into safe mode*, and checking the speed again. If your connection is fine in safe mode, then you likely have a malware problem or software conflict. The software forum has good anti-malware advice.

Is the problem consistent or intermittent?

What sort of anti-virus/firewall/anti-spyware software are you using?

Post back with the results of your speed tests, and the answers to the above questions.

*Start/Run/msconfig
Go to the BOOT.INI tab
Check the box next to the word SAFEBOOT
Click the radio button next to NETWORK
Reboot, try to connect and download the file.
