I had been having a problem with my internet explorer and outlook express unexpectantly shutting down. I would get an error message and then my explorer windows would close out. I also was experiencing a lot of static on my telephone line. A telephone technician came out and diagnosed it as my modem (Zyxel 600 series) going bad.
Fast forward to 3 days ago. After waiting two weeks I received my new modem (Zyxel 600 series still). I plugged it in without installing any of the software because the prior modem was already set up. The intermittant shutting down has gone away, but the static on my line is still there. The static is loud enough that you can barely hear the other person on the line. I have checked all of my lines and tried removing and replacing all of the filters, but no luck. The only time I can seem to get rid of the problem is when I pull the telephone line out of the modem. I use a patch panel where all the lines come in and one (right now) is routed to the modem and back into the main line. I have had this configuration since the beginning of the year without much problem.
I noticed something in the modem's instructions about properly setting the channel. What is that in relationship to a telephone channel? Could it be the source of the problem?
Any other ideas?
