DSL problem

I had been having a problem with my internet explorer and outlook express unexpectantly shutting down. I would get an error message and then my explorer windows would close out. I also was experiencing a lot of static on my telephone line. A telephone technician came out and diagnosed it as my modem (Zyxel 600 series) going bad.

Fast forward to 3 days ago. After waiting two weeks I received my new modem (Zyxel 600 series still). I plugged it in without installing any of the software because the prior modem was already set up. The intermittant shutting down has gone away, but the static on my line is still there. The static is loud enough that you can barely hear the other person on the line. I have checked all of my lines and tried removing and replacing all of the filters, but no luck. The only time I can seem to get rid of the problem is when I pull the telephone line out of the modem. I use a patch panel where all the lines come in and one (right now) is routed to the modem and back into the main line. I have had this configuration since the beginning of the year without much problem.

I noticed something in the modem's instructions about properly setting the channel. What is that in relationship to a telephone channel? Could it be the source of the problem?

Any other ideas?

1)Has the static always been there since your new installation? In any amount? This sounds like a line problem to me.
2) Do you have a central filter for all the phone lines?
3)Does the problem exist uniformly at any phone drop?
4)Have you tried to unplug the drops, one at a time, from the jumper panel?

1) No, just about 2-3 weeks ago. The intermittant explorer dropout started a couple of months ago, but has not happened since I got the new modem.
2) I did. I have also tried putting filters on all the phone lines. No Go.
3) Yes
4) I thought I did, but I will recheck.

have you moved anything at all near the patch panel, possibly causing some interference?
Have you moved the wiring or patch panel itself?
Try plugging the DSL modem into a different port on the Phone side of the panel.

Just a router, but it's not plugged in. I haven't moved any of the wiring.

Will try what you suggested. Also, the IE problem creeped back last night. Looks like I'm going to have to check each individual line. Is it possible for a cable just to go bad and cause these problems?
