DSL problem? Hi-speed Internet, Lo-speed Usenet

Over the last few days I have low speeds with the usenet. I'm getting 0-20 kb/sec, while the internet is operating at 250-300 kb/sec. I've tried tech support with my ISP and done all sorts of things from short reset of the modem, long reset, reversing telephone lines, resetting addresses, all to no avail.

I'm running 2 PCs through a Netgear router to an Earthlink VisionNet DSL modem. Both PCs have the same problem, so I don't think the problem is internal to the PCs.

At one point I ran 1 PC straight to the DSL modem, bypassing the router, and still the same problem.

So it seems to me that the modem is the problem, which is my 1st question. My 2nd question is do DSL modems handle internet traffic differently than they handle usnet traffic?

Thanks

Welcome to AnandTech Forums.

If the download speed from other sites is as it should be, chill out and wait few days the problem is probably UseNet.

Usenet is known to be erratic.

Despite the eratic nature of usenet, a variety of ISPs throttle usenet services to discourage file downloads. There was an article on AT about this (or it was an AP article I saw on Google, can't remember) a while ago.

Thanks for the help. Sure enough I'm back to about 100 kb/sec. The ways of the wired (and wireless) world are weird and mysterious.

Thanks
