hi, i have pacbell dsl and i am having some weird problems. when im surfing, the connection suddenly stops, sometimes for minutes, then resumes to normal high speed. when i play games online like counterstrike, i never experience lag, its only when im surfing, this annoys the heck out of me, please help me someone. here are the things i tried:

tried 3 diff NICs, they all do this. sometimes it worked without a sound card, so i tried different sound cards with each NIC, i went through a live, a mx400, a fortissimo, and a aureal vortex2. when i install the sound card, the lag comes back. BUT, weird thing is even without sound card i get lag sometimes. i also tried updating drivers, still no avail. heck i even tried every video card drivers for my GTS 64 still no go. here is my specs:

TBird 750 Blue @ 1.1 GIG 1.85 V
Alpha PAL6035 w/38 cfm Delta
ABIT KT7-RAID
256 MB pc100 ram cas2
Hercules 3D Prophet II GTS 64
either Kingston 10/100 NIC, SMC 10/100 NIC, or Realtek 10/100 NIC

I'm just curious, but what DSL service are you using? Because I have the exact same problem. Unfortunatly, there is nothing you can do about it. I use Bellatlantic (now Verizon).net, and i've been experiencing this problem for about a month now. I can be browing the web normally, and all of the sudden i can't load webpages for 30 seconds or so, and then it goes back to normal for 10 min, and then dies again, and back and forth.

Although yes, this is very annoying, it doesn't seem to affect "streams" of data (such as downloading a file, or playing games online)... it only seems to affect browing the web (going from webpage to webpage).
I think this is better than the problem i had 3 months ago, when my DSL would constantly die on me (permanantly) 10 times in a day, and i was forced to restart the computer each time. And then, it DID effect games. It was very annoying to relog into Everquest 10 times in a 2 hour period...

My only explanation is that there are router upgrades going on, which is causing this problem. I've heard Bellatlantic is upgrading their routers to compensate for the new 720/128 speeds they plan to give to everyone who currently has 640/90.

Either that, or their service is just really really congested. Although I highly doubt that, since early in the morning (when like no one is online), it still happens. But its not your computer, so don't rip it apart trying to find the problem!

i finally tried the advice of using a different browser, and it works now. I use Netscape Navigator 6, and though i dont like it as much as internet explorer, i dont get the pauses and so i guess im happy. i think the problem is with internet explorer. try netscape, see what happens. it is true that the streams are continous, like dl and game, but ie is just weird

I have a friend that had the exact problem. WebBrowsing wouldn't work, and every 10 min he got disconnected from IRC. Seems that his IP (fixed IP, BTW) was being used by another computer. Calling tech support cleared things up.

I've used IE all my life (since version 3 at least), and i've never had this problem with it before. It only started happening within the last month or so. Its possible that someone else is using my ISP, but then they would have to be on 24/7 because whenever i'm on, it always happens... and i'm on a damn lot!

It could be u oc ur cpu too high. For some reason when using IE it use alot of cpu proecessing power. One of my comp has bad cpu or mobo dont know which one and I cant open IE. If I open IE it will crash the system after a while. Comp runs fine without opening IE and someone else on this board told me it has something to do with cpu or mobo not working right which affect the Internet Explorer.
