DSL or VPN

Im chosing between 256kbps 256kbps VPN. The DSL has a 5:1 contention ratio. Don't know how the VPN works though.

Also how much of a difference would there be between 5:1 and 10:1 connection ratios?

256/256VPN for $120
256/256DSL 1:10 for 100$ a month
256/256Dsl 1:5 250$ a month :S
512/512VPN for 2560$ a month

Im leaning towards the 256 1:10 conention rato connection. Any better choices from these? My current cable is getting way to unreliable.

Choosing between DSL and VPN?

Probably a mistake in phrasing.

It is like saying choosing between a Car and a Tire.

Sorry to sound like a n00b 😉 ...But which is the tyre and which the car? 😛

DSL = Type of Connection over Phone (Digital Subscriber Line)
Cable = Type of Connection over TV Coax
Dialup = Type of Connection over Phone, very slow
Satillite = Type of Connection over Satallite, IIRC requires a modem for upload.

VPN = A very complicated use of a connection to connect 2 computers/networks securely over the internet.

I'd disagree that VPN is extremely complicated.

You'd need a dsl, or other connection (broadband or dialup) to have a VPN connection to your provider.

Typically a VPN connection is a point to point connection, but using a WAN connection to get from a to b, so you'd USE a dsl connection to say, VPN into one of your friends VPN server to transfer files etc... VPN is a secure tunnel using an existing connection. It certainly can be complex but overall it's not that dificult to understand or implement.
