get a new contract, i have SBC ameritech too and i pay 29, infact now its 26 i believe
 
I love my cable modem. I get over 2000/350 and pay $46.00 a month with RoadRunner. I wouldn't even consider DSL.
 
I've had both and I prefer cable. I'd go to broadbandreports.com (if you haven't already) and do a little reading. Lots of people complain about Comcast, I've had nothing but a good experience with them (3 years and counting).
 
Get the best price/performance.

If you don't need 3000 down, save the extra $$$, if you can make use of it, go for it (if they're not the same price)
 
After having DSL 1500/128 for 3 years at $49.95/mo, I switched to cable last month and am seeing 3.2mbps/128 on broadbandreports and other test sites for the same price.

Cable rocks!
 
A lot of cable companys just upped the bandwidth cap. That's the main reason cable is doing so well. FYI for people, as someone who works with a lot of different COs and with the helpdesk direct, etc, they're talking about upping bandwidth on DSL as well. You can expect to see something as early as mid next year. Probably sooner. DSL just can't compete with cables new bandwidth.

Cable you share connection with everyone else on the same circuit.

DSL bandwidth is YOUR bandwith, but limited to CO proximity.

Best thing you can do is choose what you're happy with. You can't go by technology type. Cable has been pretty stable and i haven't seen as much fluxuation as you used to. And DSL ttechnology is progressing and more COs are becoming available in various areas. Just do your homework and make sure you're happy with your PROVIDER. Screw what type of technology they use to get your connection there.
 
DSL for me. Cable is faster IF your area isn't oversubscribed/oversold. Then it will suck and you will blame your neighbors for being a bandwidth hog.
 
I've had an almost flawless experience with my DSL connection through Bellsouth. It's been over 3 years now and the connection has always been fast and stable. I had cable (1-way with Adelphia) beforehand, but switched because the connection wasn't stable. Just be sure to check broadbandreports for your area.

I signed up for something like 4 months at 19.99/mo, after which it goes to 46.99, and there is no contract. It works pretty well, but they do have in the TOS that you can't run servers.
 
I had comcast pro for about a year. moved recently and the cable at my new place wasn't ANYWHERE near as stable as my old place, downgraded to regular cable and it was STILL costing me $57.00 / month (they charged me more because i wasn't using their tv service)

so i switched to DSL, 1.5/256 for $29.00 / month. sure it's not as much bandwidth but it cost half as much also.

i'm happy with verizon dsl so far.
