But the more that are on cable, the slower you connection. DSL you have your own dedicated circut. Plus Cable is more hackable than DSL.

I had DSL, got cable now.My cable goes down more than my DSL did, but cable is cheaper about 20.00 cheaper a month.Cable is ALOT faster than DSL, but you will notice it only on good sites, you will still get sluggish connections on slower sites.Uploading is normally capped at 128 on cable, mine just got capped 2 months ago.If you game online I noticed DSL was a bit better, still can't figure that one out.I had 166 SDSL from Flashcom (would NOT recomend them as a provider) have @Home now.Installation from Flashcom was a nightmare, took 3 months to get it.@Home took 4 days.If you live close to the Central Office of the phone company you could get good connection speeds for DSL, but depending on the provider, the cost will go up too.The DSL provider will be able to tell you what speed options you can get from your address.I like my cable modem and so far(6 months) so good.I also dont have a lot of other people in the area with cable modems, so I'm lucky.I live around alot of older people that don't want to know what the internet is :D good for me!Not sure if this helps, but just giving you a look from both sides.Good Luck.

By all means get the DSL, the DSL is the only way to go, tell all of your friends to get the DSL also. (I have a cable modem and love it:) )

Good Luck,

Ditto, don't get cable. I only have it 'cause I was tortured. It's fast, reasonably priced, always on, and did I mention it's fast? OH yea, other than that it sucks ;).

General rule is to get what works best in your area. Depending on where you live, cable may be great - or it may stink. Same for DSL. Beyond that, if you play games you may prefer DSL. My understanding is DSL tends to provide a more consistent response time and generally a lower ping. I wouldn't know personally, though, since I have a cable modem - I live too far from the CO to get DSL.

Cable and DSL are in general about the same performance wise. Really it is highly dependent on the site you are connecting to.

DSL has the distance restriction, you must be withing 18K feet of a telco switching station. Cable has the user/bandwidth issue, the more users the less bandwidth per user.

I don't know what everyone is bithcing about price wise. I pay $40 a month for 786/128 ADSL from Ameritech, I live in the cleveland, OH area. On average I see download speeds of about 70-90Kb/s. Playing Quake III and Counter Strike on line I typically see ping times in the 50-100ms range. I have had the service for about 8 months and have no complaints, it has only gone down once when a firmware upgrade went south on them. Lost about 5 days service but was not charged for it.

My advice is to try out the cable modem first and only if the cable is slow (due to many users on your node)go with DSL. You can try your speed on www.dslreports.com, an excellent page.

I am 4500k download /1200k upload with cable... what else do I need to say? ;)
