I'm in Weymouth Ma and get my interet access through Mediaone (AT&T). The speeds don't really live up to my expectations but I'm coming off a T3 at work and the difference doesnt bug me too much. I love it, but I've also got as many gripes.
DSL uses telephone lines vs. Cable which uses bandlines to the street, meaning that DSL connects point-to-point and cable is shared. The sharing scenerio is your biggest obsticule as when more users are online on a cable system you get network congestion (ssssssslow-stop-stutter). If you don't have a firewall with a cable modem your also open to bad traffic, but that's another story. People who dont see the point of Firewalls get what they deserve.
Anyhow, Dsl's switched network offers you dedicated bandwith which in years to come will be more value added due to streaming media and online gaming. However Dsl, is limited at times by the distance that you are from the hub, each DSL hub only allows for (n) amount of users in an area (a) times amount of users (n). So if the hub is located outside of what the telephone company feels is adequate before signal fade, they won't hook you up. Some local telephone companies are now either installing entirely new networks or simply adding signal boosters to fill the demand for the service.
Now here comes the caveat, The cable modems have the capacity to outperform their DSL counterparts but are mainly limited by the aforementioned network congestion times, I think having the cable modem for home usage is great and with cable companies adding more and more features to their services the cable will be your better bet for consolidating all of your data, eventual telephone, and live media requirements. Also, the cable systems are mostly all new, a lot of the DSL systems are simply new technology over the original 1970's copper wires that have been beneath the surface for about 30+ years with occasional patches of fiberoptics in-between. Great for 7mps from your pc to the hub on firecable then 2-3mps on the old copper wire to another hub where the cycle gets repeated again and again. These are lags you don't really notice but they are there. Say for example, Downtown Boston (new lines and all new fiberoptical cable) versus Weymouth (old cables and spliced in fiber optics near city hall, etc...etc...
(And verizon does suck).😕
