Please forgive me if this is old stuff but its new to me:

I have a simple ethernet connection (2 machines) with thin wire coax (no hub) and we are both presently using dialup to the internet. DSL (Earthlink) is now available. If I go with DSL can I connect both machines with the one DSL connection and if so do I need new hardware or software? (my NIC has a RJ45 connection that is not being used since I am using the BNC)

just make sure earthlink gives you an ethernet dsl modem and connect it to your nic in one of your machines

that machine will have internet access but the other one may not depending on additonal s/w

link to something similar

If you are using the BNC connector, the RJ-45 will be disabled. You either need to add a 2nd NIC to one of the machines then use windows Internet Connection Sharing thing or ditch the coax and go with a DSL router or possibly just a hub depending on what your ISP will let you do. (If they do DHCP for an unlimited number of computers you can go the hub route.)

You are welcome!

Just make sure (as the man above said), that you get an External DSL Modem for Ethernet Card (No USB, No Internal).

Thin net(coax) is half-duplex. RJ-45 is full duplex so if you are trying to use two machines at the same time for both up and downloading you would be shooting yourself in the foot with coax.
