DSL Newbie question. . .

episodic

Lifer
Why when you turn off your computer does your DSL modem not remain synched?

I have an older modem - a speedstream 5260 - are there any real benefits to upgrading to a newer modem? I found this at a yard sale for 3 bucks. My service is only 256/128 (although speed tests are showing like 190/70 in that range. . .)

Why does it create 2 connections in windows xp connections screen? I have the one connection from my ethernet card and another connection for pppoe? Which should I firewall?

Hope I make sense here

Also I had speedtweaked previously for a fast cable modem connection. I have no clue what I changed haha. . . anyone can tell me what I need to look at for a slower dsl pppoe connection to change settings/ registry settings wise?. ..

For my slow connection is the router worth it ? Does it 'increase speeed/ping/etc?"

Thanks for some of the answers. Anyone else got the rest?

Speed has nothing to do with it.

$10 buys you: Keep Alive feature, Stable Connection, Hardware Firewall, DHCP server, and Wireless Capacity.

You want more speed get more expensive service.

A router won't increase speed, but it gives you a hardware firewall and the ability to quickly and easily give net access to ther computers.

Is there anything wrong with what I've done so far? I have a second nic card in my main computer that is a wireless pci nick. I have it set to ad hoc, and I share my internet connection to this nic. I have wep and ssid set.

So my laptop gets internet access through this computer wirelessly.
