Hey all! i just entered the world of dsl, WOW! what a difference it is great! I have a slight problem with my hookup though. I am using the Linksys 4 port model, used it fine last night for a few hours. Went to open a web page this morning, and it was a no-go. Page not found and all. Looked at the modem, all was fine as far as connection goes. Called earthlink, guy had me set up the modem directly to computer (no router) and we made a new connection and all was fine again. Got off the phone. Hooked it back up to my router, went in to the routers setup (web page based) and had to manually log in to the network in there (to the pppoe or whatever) and then my connection worked fine through the router. Am i gonna have to manually log in every time I startup? Could it have been because I powered everything off last night including the moem? Maybe I should just leave it on... Or, maybe there is a automatic login that I do not know about... HELP!!! Someone.

You log on to the Router, in the PPPOE menu type username and password. Make sure PPPOE is checked. Set the router to obtain IP automatically (unless you have a static account).

As long as you don't switch off the DSL Modem, and the Router you are connected "forever" (the computer can be switched off). If you switch them off, when you switch them on again, it will take a minute or two, and the Router will automatically connect to the DSL ISP.

You can uninstall WinPOET and whatever else, the ISP dished you.

The Router's PPPOE capacity is independent from the Computer, and it keeps the connection alive.

JackMDS,

Thanks for the info. This morning though, when I turned everything back on, it would not connect, and I had to manuall go into the Linksys Setup menu (IE based) and log on the pppoe. Maybe there is some setting I did not check. I will look again tonight when I get home. After I manually connected, all was fine!
