Last night we had a pretty bad electrical storm, lots of lightening and lights flickering on and off... I have my PC, router, switch, and DSL modem all connected to my Belkin UPS, so I thought I had it all covered, but I overlooked the phone line to the DSL modem.
My oversight has apparently now resulted in a dead Ethernet port on my 2 year old Speed Stream 5100. I called SBC tech support last night, and they did confirm, based on the trouble shooting steps I went through previous to calling them, that my modem had indeed kicked the dirt and gone to Electronics Heaven.
I then asked if they could give me a free upgrade since I turned down an upgrade a year or so ago (I had no need for an upgrade at the time), and because my contract is about to renew for the 2nd time, but the support lady said the office that deals with those claims was closed at the time (8:30pm last night), and said for me to give them a call today to see what they could do for me. She didn't seem too confident I would get a free one (even after MIR) but she said I could probably get a "discounted one" from them.... (Hey, I can dream!)
I haven?t called them yet, but my question is... would it be better to get one from them at their "discounted rate," or get this one from NE. (If you notice, the last guy to review it said that his Speed Stream 5100 was also zapped in a storm and this upgrade worked fine for him.)
Right now I use my modem in bridged mode so I can do VPN and FTP through it (my router is doing the PPPoE authentication and firewall work), but I would like to handle everything via my modem if it's possible. It looks like the D-Link linked above will do everything I need... is it even worth calling SBC to see what kind of POS they will offer me at their "discounted price?" Will they despise me, slow my connection, and shun my tech support calls if I get one that isn't from them?
Please voice your experiences and opinions... or feel free to call me a %fill in the blank% for asking this question in the first place.
Thanks!!!
