I have a DSL modem and the phone line cable has gone bad (ie ripped apart).

Will a standard phone cable work or will I need to replace it with phone/modem cable?

A standard phone cable should work just fine, chances are, unless your house was built in the last 20 years or so, the wiring in the walls isn't even cat 3, if you had problems getting the advertised speed I'd suspect the problem is with the house wiring not with the cable from the wall jack to the modem.

* my bad I read the above incorrectly, kornphlake was right.

DSL is rated for "CAT 1" otherwise known as flat cable.

As long as your connections are good, it will work. Running CAT6, 5 or 3 is kinda pointless for the last 45 feet when 99% of the copper in the service is flat cable back to the DSLAM.

On topic, a standard phone cable will work fine.

*PS obviously when running new cable in a house, it is worth the effort to install cat5e etc. This is not to improve the quality of a call / DSL etc but more so you can reuse it for data later.
