DSL Modem and two comps - is this possible:

I have DirectTV DSL (Telocity)

My DSL modem works fine on my parents computer - conected to their NIC. It also has a USB option, which I would like to use for my computer. They don't need to be able to be used at the same time. Should I be able to set up my computer using their software to work over the USB connection? I tried once and it didn't work but I'd rather see if it's possible before spending more time. I don't want to buy a router - moving out in 3 weeks.

Thanks

BigD,
It is called "sharing" the connnection.

What you need is to get a crossover cable and a NIC for your putr.
The USB is a pain to set up but you should be able to eventually get it to be installed after several uninstalls, installs.
The NIC ethernet install is a snap.

Any 10/100 NIC will work ($10) and a crossover cable connecting the two NIC's from each computer.

Set the services in Internet Connection/Properties ---for CLIENT on one (your computer) only. The o/s will depend on what other services you need on the Server (one with the gateway or modem).
In XP it is different than W98, so look what the settings are before changing anything on the working Computer with the Gateway.

You'll then set up sharing in the settings of each. Don't remember the exact details, but that will get you sharing your DSL.

I have the samething you have, but I use a hub (given to me), instead of a crossover cable.
I also am using XP Pro on both machines and it is a snap to set that up.

My DirectTV DSL connection is a static connection and is really fast. (+1.5mb/s).
I also have a ppp/oE with BellSouth DSL. It is also a good connection, but BellSouth still has that monoply attitude.
They will soon loose my 2nd phone line as well as my DSL service because they would not give me what DirectTV was able to offer:
that is to provide DSL on my business line for the same price as the residential line.

Here is the value of compitition. ($25/mo savings + $50/mo phone line cost reduction by eliminating one line).
Sorry for getting off the subject.

To expand more on what TomBilliodeaux said. The card you install in the computer with the DSL modem here are the settings.
TCP/IP 192.168.0.1
subnet 255.255.255.0

Client computer
TCP/IP 192.168.0.2
subnet 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.0.1

You'll need to run winipcfg or ipconfig /all on the main computer to get the DNS server list.
After you get the DNS IP's go back to the client computer and type them into the DNS list.

I never tried it my self, but I read that it can be done.

The issue could be PPPOE related (if the system uses PPPOE for authentication.)

You probably have to Install the PPPOE software with the same ID and PW used on the main computer.

Thanks guys - will try it out tonight... I already have a NIC in mine and a X-over cable right here...

Just to reiterate - I should:

Uninstall DTV DSL on parents' comp
Reinstall it to use USB
Network both computers and install ICS on them
Change the DNS/TCP settings on both

?

BTW - 98SE on parents' comp, ME on mine...

I just spent over 30 minutes trying to get it to use the USB but it just won't detect the gateway... sucks... oh well, using the ethernet is faster anyway, I guess I can live with this comp for a few more weeks...
