DSL modem and Cable modem questions

Hi

Right now I am on cable internet access and have a Motorola cable modem with RJ-45 and USB connection capabilities (obviously using the RJ-45), but if I move to an area that also has cable but with a different provider, can I use the SAME modem? I bought it myself - its not rented. Do I just need to register the MAC address of this modem with the new provider?

Also, if cable is not available - and DSL is only available, do any DSL modems have RJ-45 ports? Or are they all USB only?

If USB only, can I use a PC as a server? If I go this route, what would I need? What operating system, software, etc? Windows 2003 Server with firewall software?

Yes, you can use the same cable modem if the new provider uses the DOCSIS standard. They all pretty much do anymore so I'd say there's a 99% chance it will work.
Yes, there are DSL modems with RJ45. Most anymore have both USB and RJ45.
Regardless of what connection you get, a dedicated firewall is a very good idea. Either set up an old PC as one, or buy a cheap DSL/cable router. If you decide to use a PC, a linux/*nix based OS is IMHO the best way to go.

I already have cable internet with 6-7 PCs hooked up via router and a series of hubs and switches.

Thanks for the info!

If you move and get a new service provider, they will simply provision the cable modem for use on their network.
