I think technically it's called a DSL line fee which QWest charges $31.95 for.

I used to have my DSL configured like this:
$25 Qwest regular phone service
$31.95 Qwest DSL line fee
$25 DSL ISP since Qwest/MSN DSL sucks
==========================================
$81.95 plus various taxes/fees

Thanks to a Hot Deal a few months ago I switched to EarthLink DSL, so now I am paying:
$25 Qwest regular phone service
$50 EarthLink DSL (includes line access)
===========================================
$75 plus various taxes/fees

Are you kidding me?

Is that even legal? That's highway robbery! :Q:|
AFAIK, that's how DSL works everywhere, whether they tell you or not. That's one of the good things about DSL - you're free to choose any ISP that supports service with your telco.

When I had DSL, it was 25$/mo for ISP access, and like 32$/mo for the DSL line from Verizon... for 768k/128k. I could've gone with a cheaper ISP, but that would've meant changing email addresses.. after being with the same ISP for like 3 years on dialup, I just figured I'd fork over the $ for the convienence factor.

I understand that is the way it works, but those prices are still astronomical.

$50USD for 768/128 DSL? People would be revolting in the streets here in Canada. Up here, the loop charges are bundled into the price that the ISP advertises. They collect all the money, and then pay the ILEC whatever the fees are for the loop. (not quite as high as the US, IIRC) The money left over is then used to pay for the bandwidth, and hopefully, to turn a profit.

I was surprised more at the overall price than anything. :Q

Before DSL there was ISDN....in some places you could/can get it for $30 monthly for 128k, in other places $30 only buys you the ISDN itself. Now add a penny per 56k minuter, and 2 cents for each 128k minute.

As long as people pay, the providers are happy....DSL is like a drug to some.
