DSL Lite OK?

My parents might get DSL Lite from Bellsouth for $30 for complete choice customers. Although their website says $35 for complete choice and $30 for unlimited plan customers. They current pay $23 for dial up (earthlink). This is worth the extra $7 isn't it? I think it's rated at 256K DL, which is double the speed of dual channel ISDN, and from what I remember, dual channel ISDN was fairly quick. So it seems worth it to me.

If this were offered in my area and included the telco's DSL fee ($31.95/mo in Portland, Oregon for QWEST) I would go for it.

Definitely better than dialup....however BS has full dsl for like $10 more at least here....I have it

It took two months to get right though 🙁 I reran all cat5e for phone lines, replaced the eq at my end, they replaced their eq at theirs....finally it turned out to be a bad 'bridgetap'....they rewired me from the CO (switched pairs)....1200Mbps is my average during peak.....I have hit a little over 1300....my lowest has been 1100 MBps....much better than the 218K I was getting before they fixed it. 🙂

256K is ok for surfing but if you plan on sharing that connection with multiple computers I would go faster.

For Example with my 3mb/sec connection I can Download from newsgroups,Kazaa and Multiplayer game with a ping less then 80 all at the same time.

You're getting jacked lol

I get 3mb down and I download from the web, use the VoIP phone and multiplayer game and get like 40-50ping max

telco DSL fee? 😕

with Qwest, you not only pay the phone company for the DSL line, but you also have to pay a service provider (MSN, AOL, ect) for access to the internet

I think technically it's called a DSL line fee which QWest charges $31.95 for.

I used to have my DSL configured like this:
$25 Qwest regular phone service
$31.95 Qwest DSL line fee
$25 DSL ISP since Qwest/MSN DSL sucks
==========================================
$81.95 plus various taxes/fees

Thanks to a Hot Deal a few months ago I switched to EarthLink DSL, so now I am paying:
$25 Qwest regular phone service
$50 EarthLink DSL (includes line access)
===========================================
$75 plus various taxes/fees

If you get regular steady 3Mbps you are lucky indeed....cable is the best consumer service if it lives up to it's rating....unfortunately DSL is more reliable for most....cable and satellite were options here at equal costs....heck I already had satellite, but the latency would suck for gaming.....cable here I talked to a guy down the street....he is wanting to go back to dialup...he said it goes down, it's only about 200k most of the time he is on at night....the only times he got good connections were weekend mornings (he doesn't surf alot though)....

That guy you talked to must have a piss poor provider then...I am @ a solid 3mb\sec connection 24/7 on my cable connection. I would be tempted to switch back to dsl If I could get 1.5down/768 up.

you are lucky then....try cable in a heavy metropolitan area...you are sharing bandwidth on the pipe directly.....it goes downhill fast.

Are you kidding me?

Is that even legal? That's highway robbery! :Q:|

Qwest charges a line fee :Q

So when they say 256 for $30 and 512 for $40, they mean that's just for the line...you also need an ISP! :Q

That's friggen terrible! :|

yup... dsl has a completely fvcked over method, you have to deal with up to 3 companies to get it. all because the gov't fears the telco monopoly.

AFAIK, that's how DSL works everywhere, whether they tell you or not. That's one of the good things about DSL - you're free to choose any ISP that supports service with your telco.

When I had DSL, it was 25$/mo for ISP access, and like 32$/mo for the DSL line from Verizon... for 768k/128k. I could've gone with a cheaper ISP, but that would've meant changing email addresses.. after being with the same ISP for like 3 years on dialup, I just figured I'd fork over the $ for the convienence factor.

The most popular DSL ISP here (and the one I was asking about) is Bellsouth, also the main telco here. Is that why there's no fee? Unless they just somehow slap it on later, which would seem illegal, there is nothing in the paperwork stating there are any more fees. You're paying them for the regular phone service, and the DSL. That seems to be it? Bellsouth DSL
