DSL Line (aT&T)

Hi everyone, I just got my service connected. The package states that the modem has to be turned on and connected, in order for me to join the best performance speed. While this is going on, can I turn off my computer? Can someone get inside my computer when I shut down my computer with the modem on?

Yes you can turn off your computer. What's happening is your modem is being sent updates which is why it needs to be on.

If your computer is off then there is very little chance they could access it (wake on lan would be one way). I think for you I would highly recommend a router as a good safe investment to protect yourself and your computer.

There are actually "ramp-up" periods at the beginning of DSL service establishment, and some telcos swear by the fact that your computer should be on 24/7 for the first couple of weeks after your account is set up. I've personally not paid much attention to that...
