Does anyone know of a surge protector that will work with DSL modems? I would like to protect my DSL modem but my modem will not sych if I have it going through the surge protector I have now. It is a belkin surge protecter. I just need one that will work with my DSL modem.

Any ideas?

SlipperySlope,

You know, man, I've been waiting for someone to ask this question. I asked the same exact question about 4 months ago when I made the move to DSL. Ah, I'm happy now.

I have a Belkin Surge Master Pro Gold surge protector. My phone line runs from the wall, to the input of the Belkin, from the output of the Belkin, to my DSL modem. I have no problems. I was as paranoid as you are now...w/good reason though. We all want to ensure that everything will run at 100%.

Some questions:
1. Your Belkin prolly has red/green lights that show "good ground" and other status. Is everything OK w/o the phone line plugged in?

2. As Poncherelli said (yeah, we all dug CHIPs when we were younger ;)) did you accidently plug the line that goes to your Belkin into an in-line DSL filter? If you're using the big old "wall plate" variety, make sure that you have the line to the PC plugged into the appropriate side. It's clearly labeled on the plate itself.

3. Please don't throw rocks, I'm only trying to help. That said, do you have the "input" and "output" line plugged into the correct sockets on the surge protector? Iv'e used Belking products for years and know that the writing on product is small. You really must squint to see it clearly. Double check.

Good luck.

You prolly have a bad phone cable.

I have it plugged up correctly. My modem just sits right on top of my computer and is plugged up as we speak of course. I then plugged the wall cord into the input wall jack and the modem into the phone jack on the surge protector(I switched it just to make sure that wasn't the problem. It just won't sych. BTW I am using an external Alcatel 1000(had to have something to use with my router).

My surge protector is a belkin surgemaster 2.

Also, I did not plug in any filters in between the modem and the wall or surge protector.

Jim

EDIT. Just tried a different phone cable and it didn't work either.

Darn, that's weird. Since you've already switched RJ45 cables and bypassed the surge protector, we can only deduce that it is the surge protector at fault. I guess you just got "a bad one" which is really weird b/c I've had three diff Belkin's (diff models) on three diff systems (dialup, DSL & cable) and have't had a bad one yet...thats' why I keep buying them. Gee whiz..I don't know what to say.

I'm thinking that possibly you have a weak signal and it can't "push thru" the surge pro..

Bypass the SP and check DSLreports. com and see what your line speed/packet loss, etc are. If they report no probs, then you need to replace that SP. I would never operate on a permanent basis w/o total system protection, to include phone line protection. For an evening though, you should be fine. Please let me know how it all works out.

I have the exact same one, except mine was some kind of "limited edition" or some crap like that...it has a higher "joules" rating. Big deal...but it's the same darn thing. My DSL works fine on it. Call the phone company and have them run a line test. You quite possibly have a weak signal.

Aside from calling the phone company, the only thing I can suggest is go buy another surge protector and try it out. You can always return it if it doesn't work for you. Sorry I couldn't help you out more. :( I hope you get it fixed. Good luck.

Mike
