Hi,

I figured I would try to figure out my problem with you guys seeing as my ISP doesn't seem to understand that my latency problem is NOT due to my graphics card and cpu configuration...

Ever since I upgraded my DSL service from 3mb to 5mb my ping times in all my games doubled! My download speeds also went from 300k to 650k but that's not really that important to me seeing as all I do is play games.

Could anyone help me figure out what the reason for this is and if there is anything I could do about it ?

thanks guys.

Did you restart your modem after the upgrade? By restart, I mean turn the modem off and back on. Start with the basics and then move to step 2.

Happened to me, the ISP has a setting for DSL that they control the mode of your connection. Basically this also affects your connection stability. I'm guessing your a decent distance away from the CO (central office) and so for you to be able to get the 5mb connection, they had to take you off of the fast type mode and over to something slower (latency wise) so that your SNR wouldnt go nuts and cause you to lose connection / drop packets.

Have them flip you back to 3mb, or ask them to check into what I said, they probably wont because they wont be able to guarantee your service, also I wonder if they have an SLA (service level agreement) and what it is, if your ping times are above this, then they need to be fixing it. However, determining your SLA is hard because its a number of milliseconds that you shouldnt exceed, but the caveat is that this number is time only spent on their network. So lets assume their SLA is 60ms and from california to new york you ping 100ms, as long as your on and off their network in less than 60, they are meeting these ping times.

Hope this helps you out man!

And sorry; for the life of me I can't remember what this "mode" setting is reffered to. But when I had the issue, my ping times did actually double (to the millisecond).
