well, i just moved into my apartment for college and i connected the cable from my cpu to the connection on the wall... i believe it's an ethernet cable. anyways, the internet works fine and it's pretty fast, but not really all that fast :( i did some internet testing to see how fast my connectin was going... in pcworld, it says about 154 kilobits/sec, bandwith place says 324kb/sec, another place says like 215kb/sec. this is extremely slow! when i browse through the net, it goes pretty fast, but definitely not as fast as dsl should go... also, i don't know too much about dsl, but is there supposed to be a network connection icon in the taskbar... it says speed - 100 mbps . i dunno if that's right. the highest speed i've attained is 40kb/s in kazaa. i have xp professional by the way, if that makes any difference.

What type of plan do you have? If you have a 256 or 512k plan, those numbers aren't out of line. If you have 768k or higher, the numbers are low but probably nothing they will be willing to support (they likely have a minimum gaurenteed speed, and you're probably achieving it). Who's your provider and what's your plan?

Those numbers are not out of line. Unless you want to spend really big numbers, you will not do much if any better. A lot of the speed depends on who you are connecting to also. A slow or more heavily used site will be slower. Kazaa again will be slow because you are probably downloading from someone who more than likely has a 56k dialup.

Sounds like you are sharing an internet connection with others in your building.

I have an Adsl connection with 384kbs download and 128 kbs upload, which equals 48 kilobytes per second download. I average right at 40 ks. the best ever was 45. my isp tells me there is a certain amount of overhead and the distance from the my line to there closest box is why I don't reach 48k\s. I am a little over 2 miles. a far as the network icon that is just showing the speed that the ethernet card is capable of, not your your download transfer rate.

My 384/100 line has an average download speed of 50-55 KB/s, the best ever was 62. The upload is 10-15KB/s.
