I am about to move to Würzburg, Germany for two months and I want to have DSL installed in my apartment, but I have no experience with either Germany or DSL so I thought I would hit you all out for help.

First, is there any reason my landlord would have an issue with having DSL installed? Is there any installation boxes that need to be put up or is it simply a modem in my place? From my awkward English/German conversations over the phone so far my guess is that the landlords have no clue what DSL even is so they will be of no help.

Second, I am not quite sure how to work through the DSL plans over there. I checked with a couple of DSL providers and the phone number there is eligible for service, but my German is not good enough to quite handle all the options.

The main one I have been looking at is freenet ? but I can only find their prices for 1 year contracts. If anyone knows anything about how to manage all this I would be really grateful. Thanks!

Yeah, my German isn't so hot right now either. Also, I suspect that any old DSL modem off the shelf might not work either. Maybe a native German will help out here.... :)

Heya,

I live in Germany. If you can get Arcor then do it. They are the best in regards to price and speed. They also have the best ping if you want to play online. Check this link out. It should help some more...

QSC is also good. They don't require a phone line. So you can just pay for the actual DSL. With the others, including Arcor, you need the phone line, and sometimes even ISDN. It is a different world here, which I learned when I moved here myself.

Thanks for the help again everyone... I tried Arcor and Lycos but I can't seem to find out if they have a package that is less than a 12 month contract. As far as I can tell they don't. Does anyone know of a month to month contract for DSL in Germany?

Fine print is probably a world-wide issue.... "Mindestvertragslaufzeit 12 Monate" etc...

translates roughly as Minimum contract 12 months; automatic extension by the further 12 months, if no notice within the prescribed period is received at least 3 months before expiration of the contract

It is wading through all this fine print that trips me up and why I was hoping to find someone with experience here so I don't stumble my way into a really bad contract.

I figure that there just HAS to be a dsl deal there without the contract... people just sometimes move in less than a year. Any Germans reading this that could help out?
